découvrir est en partie réalisé
et non encore abouti car les fonds nous manquent
pour terminer ce mémorial virtuel en hommage
aux aviateurs américains dont les avions
se sont écrasés sur le sol français
durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
Malgré ce résultat inachevé,
l’association du Mémorial Américain
de Saint-Nazaire a décidé de mettre
en ligne cette maquette afin que le public tant
français qu’américain et/ou
européen puisse découvrir le prodigieux
inventaire réalisé par notre Président
d’Honneur et fondateur de l’association,
Michel Lugez.
Pendant sa jeunesse, ce Nazairien aimait à
se promener sur la plage et y admirait le Mémorial
Américain érigé en 1926 pour
commémorer le débarquement des troupes
américaines en 1917. A cette époque,
le gouvernement américain avait choisi Saint-Nazaire
comme tête de pont pour acheminer troupes
et matériels. Puis en 1941, les troupes d’occupations
allemandes eurent la fâcheuse idée
de faire sauter ce monument. Cernées dans
la « poche de Saint-Nazaire », elles
ne se rendirent que le 11 mai 1945.
En 1987, Michel Lugez qui vécut dans cette
«poche» se lança dans un pari
fou : reconstruire ce monument américain
sur la plage. Il fonda alors l’association
avec quelques amis nazairiens, et tout comme lui,
membres du Propeller Club de Nantes / Saint-Nazaire.
3 millions de Francs affluèrent dans la caisse
de l’association. En 1989, la statue de l’Aigle
et du Soldat US fut inaugurée en présence
du ministre de la Défense et de l’Attaché
Militaire représentant son Excellence, l’ambassadeur
des Etats-Unis d’Amérique. |

site that you will discover soon is almost done
and not yet finished because we don’t have
enough money to end that virtual memorial in homage
to the American airmen whom aircraft crashed on
French Soil during WWII.
In spite of this unachieved result, the American
Memorial Association of Saint-Nazaire has decided
to put on line this model for the public as French
as American and/or European could discover the prodigious
iventory realised by our Honorary President and
Founder of this association, Michel Lugez
During his youth at Saint-Nazaire, this man liked
to walk on the beach admiring the American Memorial
raised in 1926 to commemorate the American Troops’arrival
in 1917. In that time, the US government had chose
Saint-Nazaire as main harbour to carry troops and
machines. Then in 1941 German troops of occupation
had the bad idea to exploded this memorial. Encircled
in the « pocket of Saint-Nazaire »,
they surrended on the 11th of May 1945.
In 1987, Michel Lugez who lived in that «
pocket » took a foolish idea = to rebuilt
the American Memorial on the beach. He then founded
the association with a bunch of friends of Saint-Nazaire
and, as he, members of the Propeller Club of Nantes
Saint-Nazaire. 3 millions of French Francs came
in the association’s cash-box. In 1989, the
statue of the Eagle and the US Soldier was inaugurated
by the French Secretary of Defence and the Militaru
Attache representing his Excellency, the Ambassador
of the United-States of America. |
Admirant cet hommage
à l’Amérique, l’Aviation
Américaine demanda à Michel Lugez
si, par hasard et par la même occasion,
il pouvait récolter des renseignements
sur les avions de la 8ème USAF, basée
en Angleterre, qui s’écrasèrent
autour de Saint-Nazaire. Michel Lugez démarra
alors son enquête en l’étendant
à la France entière. Et 18 ans plus
tard son inventaire militaire comporte, pour la
seule 8ème Air Force chargée de
l’Europe du Nord, près de 800 avions
et plus de 6500 aviateurs.
Tout les documents et renseignements collectés
ont été scannés et traduits
en Anglais par Peter V. James et Martin Bennet
(35 000 €).
Pour terminer ce mémorial virtuel comportant
Nom, grade, état, mission, fait d’armes,
puis cause, date et lieu de crash, plus parfois
une ample documentation, nous cherchons 40 000
€. Nous vous serions très reconnaissants
si vous, ou vos amis, pouvez nous aider suivant
vos moyens financiers à boucler notre budget.
L’association du Mémorial Américain
de Saint-Nazaire a été créée
par Michel Lugez et ses amis avec un statut d’association
à but non lucratif dont l’œuvre
est de rendre hommage aux soldats américains
ayant aidés par 2 fois la France à
retrouver sa liberté.

Admiring this homage
to America, the US Air Force asked Michel Lugez
if, by the way, he could collect information on
aircraft of the 8th USAF, based in England, which
crashed around Saint-Nazaire. Michel Lugez then
started his enquiry and extended it to whole France
Territories. And 18 years later, his military
inventory of the only 8th USAF in charged of the
North part of Europe, is made of almost 800 aircraft
et more than 6500 airmen.
All these collected documents and information
have been scanned and translated in English by
Perter V. James and Martin Bennet (35 000 €).
To end this virtual memorial including Name,
rank, status, mission, war facts, then reason,
date and site of crash, plus sometimes a wide
documentation, we are searching for 40 000 €.
We shall be very obliged if you, or friends of
yours, could help us following your financial
possibilities to end up our budget.
The American Memorial Association of Saint-Nazaire
has been created by Michel Lugez and his friends
with a status of non lucrative association
which main aim is to pay homage to American
Soldiers who twice helped France to recover its
Liberty.
